Christians how do explain mary's clothing?

i grew up christian until age 19 when i converted to islam. what always bothered me was any christian i asked growing up said mary wore her clothes only because of culture. . that wearing clothes like her was only for her time period. many spanish ladies sporting tanktops and shorts wear virgin mary on bracelets of her wearing full covering with a veil on her head. and they say the same thing. i just want to know why so many christians still portray mary to wear full covering in movies,and in statues,etc. and look to her as an example to all women,but they do not try to copy her modesty in their own dresscodes. we as muslims dress like mary did ,we do not say we believe in her as a lady in our religious history and then do not try to imitate her the best we can. just like prophet jesus ,we try our best to follow him as well as prophet mohammed and all the prophets. reasons why women wear the veil for modesty as mary and the other women of the past,and the men also wear beards as the prophets did. why is todays times any different? what happened to womens sense of modesty shouldnt she still try to cover as women did in the bible?
